Students Invent Watch to Help People With Diabetes Manage Blood Sugar
Two Syracuse University students are taking home a Hunter Watson Entrepreneurial Award for inventing a novel new way for people with diabetes to test their blood sugar.
Russel Fearon and Ricardo Sanchez were granted $2,500 for their company SugEx, a modern medical tech company creating beautifully designed products that make diabetes management simple and accessible.
Their brand is dedicated to improving the Sugar Experience ™ through products that encourage users to take an active role in managing their blood sugar.
Their first device is an affordable, sleek, all-in-one wearable smartwatch. The device can be personalized to fit the customer’s lifestyle and personal preference and connects to a phone app that will display, track readings, and remind users to take blood sugar samples.
“The watch is worn with pride and not attached to the skin, thus allowing the user to feel comfortable – free of the constant mental reminder of other alternatives,” explains Fearon and Sanchez. “Another benefit of wearing the device on the exterior is to provide clarity to medical professionals in emergencies. While the device is discreet, it deftly suggests belongingness to the diabetic tribe, which can spark discourse between other diabetics.”
Hunter’s Fund
Hunter’s Fund honors the life of Hunter Watson, a young man of extremely diverse talents who was killed at 20-years-old when he was fatally injured as a passenger in a distracted driving collision.
